Proposal 5: Help the superheroine find the objects!

Social organisation

Pairs.

Timing

20 minutes.

Objectives

  • Measure distances with a measuring instrument (a ruler).

  • Use cm. as the conventional measuring unit.

  • Add distances to obtain a total.

  • Name and label key vocabulary related to the topic.

  • Produce a short sentence to recall the results of the measurements, both orally and in a written format.

  • Work collaboratively with partners.

Content

  • Comprehension of simple instructions accompanied by visual supports.
  • Writing of words from oral productions.
  • Use of verbal and non-verbal resources to communicate with others.
  • Relation of symbols, pronunciation and meaning from written models and oral expressions. Intuitive use of decoding.
  • Recognition of the magnitude of length.
  • Recognition of the concept of distance.
  • Application of the measuring process, by using a unit of measurement (cm.) repeatedly and an appropriate tool (ruler).
  • Oral description of the measuring process.
  • Use of natural numbers to solve measuring problems within meaningful contexts.
  • Use of verbal, graphic and symbolic language to represent numbers.
  • Collaborative work.
  • Vocabulary related to superheroines: logo, tiara, boots, cape…
  • Structures: The distance from the superheroine to the … is … cm.

Description

This is an information gap activity. The superheroine has lost 4 objects. To help her recover the objects, students have to measure with a ruler the distance from the superheroine to the objects they have in the boards. Each student is in charge of 2 boards, and they need to share the results, because later they have to calculate the total distance the superheroine has to cover. So, once the measurements are done, they tell each other: “the distance from the superheroine to the (object) is … centimetres”.  Then, they write down the measures in the notebook. Once they have all the measures, they add them and get the total distance. Once again, they say: “the total distance from the superheroine to the objects is… centimetres”.

 Attention to diversity

Attention to diversity: First and second graders, who still present difficulties with writing, are provided with a worksheet with the sentences so they only have to complete them with the measurements. They are only in charge of one measurement, and they do not have to add the total distance since the numbers used may be too complicated for them. Older students who present writing difficulties may use it as well. Third graders are provided another worksheet with uncomplete sentences, and they complete it with the name of the objects, the word superheroine and the measurements. They have also to add all the distances to find a total. Flashcards with the vocabulary and the grammatical structures are available for students so to be able to make sentences autonomously.

 Assessment

Students complete the worksheets in the notebook.

Also, they do a self-assessment of whether they liked the activity or not by circling the face that better represents what they feel, and another self-assessment for the understanding of the activity by circling the image that better represents their understanding.
